Million Stores: Face Plant Series

The Singleton Foundation features my story in a 9-minute episode of Faceplant, a series showcasing how people turn failure into success.

My segment traces my transformation from a young man inspired by the movie Scarface who entered the world of drug dealing, to an individual who chose to radically change his life after facing a 45-year prison sentence.

During my 26 years in prison, I leaned on education, discipline, and strategic thinking to rebuild my future. I earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree and documented my experiences in books like Earning Freedom. I also made it my mission to champion reforms around prison education and prove the potential for success after incarceration.

Today, I work as an author and advocate for change, so that more people can work toward earning freedom.

My goal is to shift perceptions about people with a criminal record. I'd like to show that anyone can achieve meaningful success with the right mindset. Regardless of what adversity a person faces today, plant seeds for a better life.
This episode of Faceplant sends a powerful message—not of the mistakes I made, but of the decisions I took to rewrite my narrative.

The video is an inspiring resource for anyone looking for proof that resilience, education, and accountability can lead to transformation.

PBS NewsHour

Soon after my release from prison, PBS NewsHour with Jeffrey Brown brought attention to my work. After serving 26 years of a 45-year sentence for drug trafficking, I’ve dedicated my life to advocating for prison reform and helping others navigate a path toward personal growth and reintegration. While incarcerated, I focused on discipline, education, and strategic thinking to turn my life around—I earned undergraduate and master’s degrees, authored several books on criminal justice, and created a framework for success that others can follow.

Today, I work to reform the system, striving to introduce mechanisms that will allow more people to work toward earning freedom through merit. To accomplish those goals, I create courses, write books, and build resources that anyone can use to build a self-directed path to success.  I emphasize the importance of setting long-term goals and putting in consistent effort to achieve them. My mission is to prove that change is possible, even in the most challenging circumstances.

I advocate for a system that measures justice by accountability, effort, and personal growth—not just time served.

NBC Compilation

After my release, journalists from San Francisco reached out to learn more about what it would be like to return to society following multiple decades in prison. An article in the San Francisco Chronicle led the NBC News Hour to reach out. They profiled my work of teaching at San Francisco State University, and other presentations I made in the Bay Area. The journey toward reform began long before the First Step Act and my work with prison systems across the United States.

Soft White Underbelly

Mark Laita, photojournalist and founder of the widely popular Soft White Underbelly YouTube channel, invited me to his studio in Santa Monica to share my story.

In our conversation, I discussed the influences that led me to break the law, but more importantly, the powerful mentors and strategies that helped me transform my life during the 26 years I spent in federal prison.

Our goal in this interview was to show others that, regardless of past mistakes or current challenges, everyone has the potential to overcome adversity and become something better.
