Principle

Attitude

By adopting a values-based, goal-oriented mindset, I could more easily navigate the complexities of confinement. Instead of seeing all that was bad around me, I could find ways to conquer adversity and work toward a brighter future. It opened a better attitude, empowering me along the way. Attitude influences success.

overview

If we identify success and the values by which we must live, we can more easily identify the incremental goals we must make to advance. Yet we also need the right attitude, as measured by our 100 percent commitment to success. These principles guided me through the darkness of confinement and they can drive anyone toward extraordinary achievements.

The Power of the Flywheel

If we identify success and the values by which we must live, we can more easily identify the incremental goals we must make to advance. Yet we also need the right attitude, as measured by our 100 percent commitment to success. These principles guided me through the darkness of confinement and they can drive anyone toward extraordinary achievements.

Your BHAG

In Good to Great, Collins taught me how to live as the CEO of my life. I had to set a BHAG, a big, hairy, audacious goal. I wanted to improve the outcomes of America's prison system. To work toward the goals, I needed the right attitude, combining passion with purpose. Align your goals with what you want to achieve and influence your attitude.

The Right Attitude

When living in crisis or darkness, the environment spawns depression. To overcome, build the right attitude. Change your attitude by making a 100% commitment to your vision, or success as you define it. Attitude will influence whether you thrive or stagnate. I could always adjust my attitude by aligning each step with the pursuit of success.

Attitude

Flywheel Momentum

Collins' Flywheel approach works best when actions align with goals. And if we identify the small, achievable steps that lead toward a larger purpose, we restore confidence and build self-respect. Slowly, the "wheel" of momentum will spin on its own, creating a cascade of successes that propel growth forward. It's how we influence our attitude.

Visions into Actions

Meditate on three questions: What excites your passion? What can you excel at, or become the best in the world at achieving? What resources drive your mission? While in prison, I thought about developing strengths to inspire others. Goals drove my attitude, providing clarity and energy to overcome obstacles and focus on results. Build resilience.

Your 100% Commitment

Commitment isn’t partial or occasional—it’s an all-in attitude that propels action. Reflect regularly to ensure your actions align with your values, or how you define success. This strategy ensures that every decision moves you closer to success. It kept my attitude strong, inspiring growth while I was in prison. It continues to fuel my attitude.
