Principle

Action

We should expect obstacles, but we can't allow them to define our path or limit our pursuit of success. The Straight-A Guide became my framework for persevering through challenges and obstacles, helping me focus on the action steps I could take each day, regardless of what adversity I had to endure. Take bold action steps to build success.

overview

We can define success, and identify the values that will allow us to succeed. We can set clear goals that keep us moving forward, or do so with good cheer, aspiring to a better life. But if we don't act, we don't realize any of the possibilities. To create opportunities, we need to act intentionally, making progress every day. Empower yourself.

Take Ownership

Overcoming challenges starts with owning decisions. Don't talk about changes you want to make. Act in ways that show commitment. Reading books in solitary helped me lay out the plan to get through decades in prison. I understood the incremental actions I'd have to take in the first days, months, and years. They help you own a future you create.

Develop Skills Through Discipline

Obstacles can't block us from developing skills if we're disciplined. Discipline leads to deliberate action. When authorities blocked my access to a word processor, I disciplined myself to write 1,000 words a day by hand. Those disciplined actions kept me on the path to success, which opened future opportunities. Develop discipline with action.

Build Intrinsic Motivation

Our commitment to success gives us the motivation to act in ways that will open more opportunities. Even in restrictive environments, acting on inner values provides strength. Each action we take moves us closer to completing a goal, and each goal motivates us to take another step. We fuel our motivation with action.

Action Creates Momentum

To conquer despondency, we need to act in ways that align with our vision for success. Those actions help us take another step toward the goals that will open the next opportunity. Self-pity, or living as a victim, takes us in the opposite direction of success. Build momentum with deliberate actions that align with your vision. Act intentionally.

Consistency Builds Expertise

Master skills with consistent actions. When officers locked me in solitary, I learned to use that time to develop writing skills. By forcing myself to write 1,000 words daily, regardless of where the system kept me, I learned how to think differently and developed skills. What action steps can you take to advance your prospects for success?

Motivation Overcomes Resistance

When facing resistance or restrictions, think about actions you can take. Those action steps will motivate you to take future actions. They should relate to the success you aspire to become. Reading stories of others’ perseverance inspired me to push forward. We can develop an intrinsic drive which keeps us working toward meaningful goals.
