Introduction

My name is Michael Santos, and I’m no stranger to adversity. At the age of 23, I made choices that led to my conviction for leading a cocaine distribution enterprise, resulting in a 45-year prison sentence. By the time my judge sentenced me, I'd already served one year in solitary confinement. While in that cell, I realized I had two choices—either sink further into despair or use my time to build a better future.

By reading about leaders, I learned how to choose the second path. That decision changed my life, and it became the foundation for Prison Professors.

Our platform helps justice-impacted individuals learn to recalibrate, develop resilience, and take control of their lives. With articles, videos, books, courses, and mentorship, we show people that no matter where they’re starting from, they can create a meaningful and successful future.

Although our work primarily focuses on those impacted by the criminal justice system, the principles we teach apply to anyone navigating significant challenges. Whether you’re struggling with personal setbacks, looking to bounce back from professional failures, or searching for purpose, Prison Professors offers strategies to help you start rebuilding—one step at a time.

Those who work through the lessons we offer will develop strategies that empower them, just as they empowered me. Leaders taught me the importance of:

  1. Mentors and Role Models – Early in my incarceration, I met people who challenged the way I thought. One officer, noticing my interest in growth, handed me books like Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning and Plato’s Republic. These works introduced me to concepts of self-reflection, accountability, and purpose—even in the direst circumstances.
  2. A Commitment to Education – I recognized that to change my narrative, I needed to invest in learning. Over 26 years in prison, I earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees, wrote self-help books, and mentored others.
  3. A Plan for Lifelong Resilience – Inspired by figures like Socrates and Marcus Aurelius, I crafted a three-part strategy for growth:
  • Educate myself to prepare for a productive future.
  • Contribute to others, proving my worth and value to society.
  • Build a network of mentors, advocates, and supporters to advise and motivate me.

How Prison Professors Helps Others

At Prison Professors, we offer a roadmap for transformation, whether you’re navigating life after incarceration or recovering from personal or professional challenges. Here’s how we help:

‍

1. Mindset Shift

The first step to creating change is owning your situation. Prison Professors teaches how to adopt a growth-focused mindset by taking responsibility for your actions and focusing on what you can control. We emphasize the principles of leaders like Viktor Frankl, who said, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

I encourage members of our community to journal regularly. This practice helps you shift your focus from negativity to possibility. Further, you can start building a tangible record to show why you're a worthy candidate for a higher level of liberty, at an earlier time.

‍

2. Education and Lifelong Learning

Strive to earn academic credentials, or pursue self-directed learning. For me, studying philosophy, writing books, and earning degrees in prison redefined my identity from “prisoner” to “learner.”

With Prison Professors, we provide access to resources such as:

  • Courses designed to teach transferable skills that lead to higher income streams upon release.
  • Videos and articles on personal growth, financial literacy, and professional development.
  • Strategic frameworks like our Straight-A Guide to help people set goals and measure progress.

To build confidence, identify one skill you want to improve and commit to learning something new about it each day. Consistency is where growth happens.

‍

3. Strategic Planning

No business thrives without a clear plan, and neither will an individual aiming for success. Prison Professors teaches readers how to reverse-engineer their goals into actionable steps. By focusing on short- and long-term objectives, anyone can create a blueprint for overcoming adversity.

Write down one goal you want to accomplish in the next three months. Break it into weekly tasks and track your progress to stay accountable.

‍

4. Focus on Contribution

When I began writing, I found purpose. It showed me that serving others doesn’t just benefit them—it transforms the giver, too. Prison Professors emphasizes the importance of getting involved in community-building efforts, whether through advocacy, mentorship, or volunteering.

Think of one way you can support someone in your community today. Even small acts have a way of creating ripple effects.

‍

5. Building a Support Ecosystem

Through letters, I could find people who would come into my life. They began to believe in my potential and many of them became advocates for me. Prison Professors encourages individuals to seek out coaches, mentors, or peers who can guide and encourage their growth.

Make a list of three people whose advice or mentorship you value. Reach out to one of them this week to share your goals and ask for insights.

The lessons we teach at Prison Professors aren’t just theoretical—they’re personal. I lived them. I know firsthand that change is hard, but I also know it’s possible. By putting in the work, following a clear plan, and taking ownership of your future, you can achieve more than you thought imaginable.

Today, Prison Professors exists to share these lessons with as many people as possible. Whether it’s through a video, article, or coaching session, we want to help you take your first step toward transformation. After all, success starts with one small action, repeated consistently over time. We encourage members of our community to build a personal profile on PrisonProfessorsTalent.com. Develop that profile, as I did, and create an asset to leverage later, when pursuing self-advocacy campaigns that will lead to a higher level of liberty, at the soonest possible time.
